MultiDom
How to use the Multi Domain option ?
What's the purpose of this option ?
The Multi Domain option permits the hosting of several domain names under the same web hosting offer.
This way you can manage several web sites under only one web host.
Who can benefit from this option ?
This offer is exclusive to people who own one of the following web hosting plans: the 720plan, mediaplan or xxlplan (or pack).
Warning! Only your primary domain will benefit from e-mail services.
You must use the
E-mail FowardingMxplan if you wish to have e-mails for a Multi Domain site.
How do I setup this option ?
Example domain names for this guide:
domaine.com will be your primary domain name.
domaine.net will be an other domain name that you wish to host under the same offer.
Setting up the Multi Domain option compromises of 3 steps:
- Configuring the DNS of the new domain (domain.net)
- Creating a sub-domain on your primary domain's host which is where the new domain will be hosted (sub.domain.com)
- Fowarding the new domain towards the sub-domain (domain.net --> sub.domain.com)
DNS Configuration
In order for Multi Domain to function, it is necessary that the new domain is directed to the same IP address as your primary domain (your web host).
To make the accordance to your web host, you must modify
field A of your new domain (domain.net)
Remember the IP addresses concerning each plan:
- 720 plan -> 213.186.33.16
- Media plan -> 213.186.33.17
- XXL plan -> 213.186.33.18
If your new domain name is already registered with OVH
The modification can be activated through your
Manager
Click on :
Then click on the link below
DNS Expert:
You can modify the IP address in
field A (IP address of the XXL plan offer in our example)
then click on the diskette to validate.
If your new domain is not registered with OVH
You must enter your registrar (the company that manages your domain name) or your internet service provider in order to modify the
field A of your domain. The goal is to foward your domain towards the IP address of your primary web host. This cannot be activated in your OVH Manager.
Sub-domain creation
This step consists of creating a sub-domain under your primary domain (domain.com).
This way, you can put your new site in a distinct directory under your web host and it will be accessible at
http://sub.domain.com
/>
The creation is activated in your Manager
Click on :
Then click on the link below the
Sub domains:
Enter the sub-domain
sub.domain.com in the directory of your choice
( it is possible to branch together several sub directories), then click
on the diskette to save.
The requested directory will automatically be created on your web host.
You can directly access the site through your FTP and place the
domain.net site's files there.
Fowarding the new domain
Once the sub domain is created and accessible, the only thing left to do is create the foward between the new domain and its sub domain. This way, your site will be accessible at the
http://www.domaine.net address. Its a transfer that is completely invisible to the user.
The redirection can be activated through
Manager
Click on :
Then click on the link below
Multi Domain:
Enter your new domain on the left (
domaine.net)
and on the right, choose the previously created sub domain.
Click on the diskette after each change to save.
Your new domain is now accessible within a couple of hours :)
Errors
domaine.net is accessible, but www.domaine.net is not!
The reverse error is equally as possible. This error indicates that you must have
forgotten to assign one of the two sites in the third step.
Verify that you have assigned domain.net AND
www.domain.net in the
Foward the new domain section.
I can't create my Multi-Domain! The manager gives me an error everytime!
Its is very possible that the manager has not been able to determing the correct value for
field A of the domain that you are hosting under the Multi Domain. If the domain is not registered with OVH, you must contact your registrar. If the domain is registered with OVH, you can
activate the DNS by following this guide:
http://guide.ovh.net/DepannageRapide/contenu.html#1
Warning! If the IP address of the domain is not correct (see the
DNS configuration section), the fowarding will not work.
Also, you sometimes may have to wait up to 24 hours before the changes are fully activated.
